At least that\u2019s what his older brother Adan says<\/a>.\u00a0 He also says Hugo is \u201cimproving daily\u201d.\u00a0 And he says rumors to the contrary are being spread by \u201cnecrophiliac opposition\u201d as part of an anti-Chavez conspiracy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Adan, amigo \u2013 I do not think that word means what you think it means.\u00a0 At least, not in this context.\u00a0 Wondering if someone who appears to have vanished for over a month after their third<\/del> fourth cancer surgery in 18 months might be in a coma is hardly an \u201cexcessive preoccupation with death\u201d; it\u2019s a reasonable question.\u00a0 And, frankly, at this point I’ll need a little more than your word before I’ll believe your brother is “not in a coma” and is “improving daily”.<\/p>\n

Maybe Adan is telling the truth – well, except for that part about the necrophiliac opposition, which is obviously bull.\u00a0 But it\u2019s interesting that Hugo Chavez \u2013 a bona fide<\/i> lover of the limelight \u2013 has not been seen or heard from since his last cancer surgery over a month ago (Dec 11).\u00a0 No photos.\u00a0 No recorded statements.\u00a0 No written statements. No interviews – either with Hugo or his doctors.\u00a0 Nada.<\/p>\n

All we’ve heard are statements that Hugo Chavez is “doing well” by people who have a vested interest in his remaining in power.<\/p>\n

Sorry, but not being heard from for over a month rather argues against him “doing well” or “improving” a helluva lot.\u00a0 If Hugo Chavez is “doing well” and “improving daily”, why haven’t we heard squat from him<\/em>?<\/p>\n

I also find it curious that a reported friend of Hugo Chavez \u2013 Argentine President Cristina Fernandez \u2013 recently went to visit him.\u00a0 She was questioned by reporters afterwards.\u00a0 Perhaps significantly, Fernandez did not indicate she had actually seen or met with Hugo Chavez during her trip to see him.\u00a0 She also did not confirm Adan Chavez\u2019s statements, indicating that she felt Hugo’s condition was a family matter and that she felt it would be \u201cinappropriate\u201d for her to comment.<\/p>\n

Somehow, that sounds more to me like a deliberate sidestep of the question than a true concern for the Chavez family\u2019s privacy.\u00a0 But I guess I could be wrong.<\/p>\n

In any case:\u00a0 whether Hugo Chavez is in a coma or not, it\u2019s obvious he\u2019s incommunicado and incapacitated.\u00a0 Whether he recovers is the proverbial \u201c$64 question\u201d.<\/p>\n

Based on what\u2019s known of his medical history, I wouldn\u2019t give good odds on his survival.\u00a0 But, like a cockroach Hugo Chavez is a natural survivor.\u00a0 He might well survive this surgery, too.<\/p>\n

But I don\u2019t think he\u2019s going to be around terribly long if he does.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
