{"id":33254,"date":"2012-12-16T09:52:14","date_gmt":"2012-12-16T13:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=33254"},"modified":"2012-12-16T10:44:48","modified_gmt":"2012-12-16T14:44:48","slug":"breathalyzers-not-just-for-the-navy-any-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=33254","title":{"rendered":"Breathalyzers:  Not Just for the Navy Any More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it looks like the USMC is beginning to bend to the same PC whims as the rest of DoD.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s doing so by following the Navy&#8217;s lead regarding breathalyzers and mass screenings.<\/p>\n<p>The USMC has announced something called the &#8220;Alcohol Screening Program&#8221;.\u00a0 Under that program, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2012\/dec\/14\/marines-to-test-for-drunkenness-duty\/\">all Marines will be screened at random twice yearly while on duty<\/a> &#8211; war zones included.<\/p>\n<p>Show any measurable amount of alcohol, and you&#8217;re in &#8220;deep doo-doo&#8221;.\u00a0 Sure, the program guidance is that any Marine showing between 0.01% and 0.03% BAC will receive &#8220;counseling&#8221;.\u00a0 (You and I all know that in reality it means they&#8217;ll be put on &#8220;that list&#8221;.\u00a0 And with end strength going down . . . . )\u00a0 Blow 0.04% or above, and you get a trip to the medics for &#8220;evaluation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Program guidance authorizes commanders to discipline Marines &#8220;should the situation warrant&#8221;.\u00a0 How many want to bet we see a <em>de facto<\/em> &#8220;no tolerance&#8221; policy &#8211; complete with NJPs for violators &#8211; before too long?<\/p>\n<p>The program requires the appointment of coordinator at unit level, of course &#8211; as well as annual reporting requirements.\u00a0 Gee, that&#8217;s just what every unit needs:\u00a0 another extra duty position for unit leadership, another statistic to be tracked, and another mandatory annual report.<\/p>\n<p>Look, I&#8217;m NOT condoning people showing up for duty impaired.\u00a0 But this program is a freaking waste.\u00a0 Virtually everything the program mandates already exists except for the coordinator and reporting requirements.\u00a0 Almost every installation I&#8217;ve ever seen either has a breathalyzer or can get access to one through coordination with local LE.\u00a0 A commander can already order someone he suspects to have alcohol in their system to go get tested.\u00a0 And an NCO can already counsel some Joe Schmoe who shows up for duty smelling like a brewery about showing up to duty in that condition.<\/p>\n<p>As a taxpayer, I object to the waste.\u00a0 And as a former member of the military, I object to the micromanagement.\u00a0 Both are counterproductive as hell.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it looks like the USMC is beginning to bend to the same PC whims as &hellip; <a title=\"Breathalyzers:  Not Just for the Navy Any More\" class=\"hm-read-more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=33254\"><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Breathalyzers:  Not Just for the Navy Any More<\/span>Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":623,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[177,84],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-33254","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-dumbass-bullshit","category-military-issues"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/33254","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/623"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=33254"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/33254\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=33254"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=33254"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=33254"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
