The Stars & Stripes<\/a> is reporting that NATO is cutting back on “partnered patrols” of the US and Afghan military because of the spate of “insider” murders in the last year or so.<\/p>\n

Under new rules issued Sunday by Lt. Gen. James L. Terry, “such operations are no longer routine\u201d and now require the approval of a regional commander, according to a statement e-mailed by Terry\u2019s command.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost partnering and advising will now be at the Kandak (Battalion) level and above,\u201d the International Security Assistance Force\u2019s Joint Command, which Terry heads, said in an e-mailed statement.<\/p>\n

The move, according to the statement, is one of the \u201cprudent force protection measures\u201d the command has taken \u201cin light of recent events which include both the insider threat and reaction to recent world events.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Yeah, it was just last month that the Administration<\/a> was describing the casualties in these types of attacks as having a “negligible” effect on the overall strategy. So I wonder what has changed in recent weeks to make an entire 180 degree shift in the plan. <\/p>\n

Some people who shall remain nameless, but report on the war in Afghanistan from Thailand claimed that joint operations with US and Afghans had ended, but that doesn’t seem to be the case;<\/p>\n

The change doesn\u2019t end partnered operations, but does change the way NATO companies conduct their partnering, according to the command. Rather than partnering with the company- and platoon-sized units that do most of the daily patrolling, ISAF companies will focus their efforts on kandak commanders and their staffs. Afghan units below that level will operate independently.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
