{"id":31925,"date":"2012-09-07T12:31:17","date_gmt":"2012-09-07T16:31:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=31925"},"modified":"2012-09-07T12:41:41","modified_gmt":"2012-09-07T16:41:41","slug":"now-im-really-confused","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=31925","title":{"rendered":"Now I&#8217;m Really Confused"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This one has me scratching my head &#8211; bigtime.<\/p>\n<p>According to his military lawyer, accused Fort Hood mass-murderer Nidal Hasan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/2012\/09\/ap-fort-hood-hasan-offered-guilty-plea-090612\/\">offered twice to plead guilty<\/a>.\u00a0 The Army apparently rejected both offers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>FORT HOOD, Texas \u2014 The Army psychiatrist charged in the 2009 Fort Hood massacre twice offered to plead guilty and &#8220;accept full responsibility&#8221; for the crime earlier this year, his lead defense attorney said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>After the government turned him down in January, Maj. Nidal Hasan offered to plead guilty again last month without a deal \u2014 and also tried to challenge Army rules that prohibit a judge from accepting a guilty plea to murder in a death penalty case, said Lt. Col. Kris Poppe.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I can understand why the Army likely refused the first attempt at a plea; it almost certainly included conditions as part of the deal that the Army didn\u2019t want.\u00a0 And I can technically understand the second refusal, too.\u00a0 After all, rules are rules.<\/p>\n<p>No, what confuses me is the rule itself.\u00a0 Why in the hell can\u2019t an Army judge accept a guilty plea in a case where the death penalty is on the table?<\/p>\n<p>If any of our military lawyers (or other readers) could clarify, I\u2019d be greatly obliged.\u00a0 Because that just doesn\u2019t pass the common-sense test.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes it <em>really<\/em> seems like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mindparts.org\/blog_images\/pogo.jpg\">Pogo was right after all<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This one has me scratching my head &#8211; bigtime.
