{"id":31809,"date":"2012-08-31T05:54:30","date_gmt":"2012-08-31T09:54:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=31809"},"modified":"2012-08-31T08:08:20","modified_gmt":"2012-08-31T12:08:20","slug":"mannings-lawyers-are-whining-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=31809","title":{"rendered":"Manning\u2019s Lawyers Are Whining Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It seems that PFC Bradley Manning\u2019s lawyers are whining again.\u00a0 But this time, it\u2019s not over his treatment.<\/p>\n<p>No, this time they are objecting to the fact that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/2012\/08\/ap-bradley-manning-lawyers-want-emails-on-quantico-detention-082812\/\">Army officials seemed more concerned about potential bad publicity than Manning\u2019s comfort and \u201cfeelings\u201d<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0At least, that\u2019s what I get from this paragraph:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>David Coombs, a lawyer for Pfc. Bradley Manning, argued at a pretrial hearing that prosecutors have yet to turn over about 700 emails in their possession. But he said the emails he\u2019s already aware of paint a portrait of a military more concerned with combating negative publicity than with Manning\u2019s welfare and reveal that high-level officials, including a three-star general, were briefed about the conditions of his confinement.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Gee, a 3-star General was concerned that the Army might get bad publicity.\u00a0 I\u2019m shocked, I say &#8211; shocked!<\/p>\n<p>Frankly, I\u2019m not surprised that senior Army leadership is concerned about avoiding bad publicity for the Army.\u00a0 That\u2019s part of their job.\u00a0 And I couldn\u2019t personally give a hoot in hell if they were more concerned about protecting the Army than about how Manning was inconvenienced, provided they ensured he was treated humanely \u2013<em> which they did<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Let me recap a few pesky things called &#8220;facts&#8221; that Manning&#8217;s lawyers don&#8217;t seem to want to discuss.\u00a0 Manning was confined to his cell for 23 hours daily.\u00a0 So?\u00a0 Many prisoners who might be at-risk from other inmates (or who are dangerous) are similarly kept isolated.<\/p>\n<p>Manning was also evaluated as a suicide risk. Therefore, for a period of time at Quantico his clothing was temporarily taken away.\u00a0 This was done as a protective measure to ensure he didn&#8217;t attempt to harm himself with same.\u00a0 He was later provided with a suicide-prevention smock.<\/p>\n<p>But for a while, he had to make do with skivvies &#8211; and even sleep in them, without his jammies.\u00a0 Oh, the horror!\u00a0\u00a0 The horror!<\/p>\n<p>Were Manning\u2019s \u201cfeelings hurt\u201d by such &#8220;terrible&#8221; treatment?\u00a0 Whoop-te-doo.\u00a0 Personally, I couldn&#8217;t give the proverbial flying . . . flip if they were. \u00a0\u00a0 Perhaps he should have thought about the possibility that he\u2019d go to prison \u2013 and be treated harshly but humanely as a prisoner &#8211; <em>before<\/em> disclosing several hundred \u00a0thousand classified documents to persons not authorized to receive them.<\/p>\n<p>Humane treatment doesn&#8217;t necessarily equate to pleasant conditions.\u00a0 &#8220;Three hots and a cot&#8221;, adequate shelter, and protection from physical harm or abuse qualifies.\u00a0 And having to sleep in your skivvies (or naked) because you&#8217;re thought to be suicidal and your normal clothing has been taken away to ensure you don&#8217;t harm yourself with it does <em>not<\/em> qualify as abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Manning didn\u2019t give a damn about how his actions affected the Army or his brothers\/sisters in arms &#8211; or his country.\u00a0 So as long as he&#8217;s treated humanely, why should anyone in the Army give a rat&#8217;s ass whether he&#8217;s comfortable or his feelings get hurt?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It seems that PFC Bradley Manning\u2019s lawyers are whining again.\u00a0 But this time, it\u2019s not over &hellip; <a title=\"Manning\u2019s Lawyers Are Whining Again\" class=\"hm-read-more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=31809\"><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Manning\u2019s Lawyers Are Whining Again<\/span>Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":623,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[15,84,5,155],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-31809","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-legal","category-military-issues","category-politics","category-shitbags"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/31809","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/623"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=31809"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/31809\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=31809"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=31809"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=31809"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
