Assange has been offered \u201cpolitical asylum\u201d by Ecuador<\/a>.\u00a0 He\u2019s now hiding out in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.<\/p>\nAs a practical matter I\u2019m not sure exactly what good this will do Assange.\u00a0 Since he\u2019s not an Ecuadorean citizen, I\u2019m not sure Great Britain is under any obligation to honor any type of \u201cdiplomatic status\u201d Ecuador might grant to Assange \u2013 or to recognize any \u201cpassport\u201d granted him expeditiously by Ecuador (Assange is an Australian citizen, if I recall correctly).\u00a0 Nor are they obligated to allow helicopter flights to\/from the Ecuadorian embassy to any airport.\u00a0 So there remains that pesky detail of getting from the embassy to any international airport in order to leave Great Britain.\u00a0 Plus the fact that international airports in Great Britain are under British jurisdiction.<\/p>\n
Hey, if Assange wants to live the rest of his life at the Ecuadorean Embassy in London I guess that\u2019s OK.\u00a0 But given Assange\u2019s reputed arrogance and \u201cwinning personality\u201d I\u2019m guessing the Ecuadoreans will tire of him fairly soon.<\/p>\n
Still, there could be advantages in Assange ending up in Ecuador.\u00a0 I understand it\u2019s easy to get lost in the jungle, or in the mountains, in parts of South America.\u00a0 And those so lost often are never heard from again.<\/p>\n
I\u2019d personally shed no tears if Assange ended up fertilizing trees in a South American rainforest or on some Andean mountainside.\u00a0 But that\u2019s just me.<\/p>\n
