{"id":27936,"date":"2011-12-15T16:27:35","date_gmt":"2011-12-15T20:27:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=27936"},"modified":"2011-12-15T16:30:06","modified_gmt":"2011-12-15T20:30:06","slug":"hmmm-sheriff-joe-is-in-trouble","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=27936","title":{"rendered":"Hmmm&#8230; Sheriff Joe is in Trouble?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Seems to me he&#8217;s in trouble for enforcing FEDERAL law, but we have several actual lawyers here that might explain this?<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2011\/dec\/15\/justice-department-arpaio-violated-federal-law\/\" target=\"_blank\">Justice Department: Arizona Sheriff Arpaio violated federal law<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/department-of-justice\/\">Justice Department<\/a>, following an often hostile three-year investigation, said Thursday the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/maricopa-county-sheriffs-office\/\">Maricopa County Sheriff&#8217;s Office<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/maricopa-county-sheriffs-office\/\">MCSO<\/a>) in Phoenix under the leadership of Sheriff <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/joseph-m-arpaio\/\">Joseph M. Arpaio<\/a> violated federal law and the Constitution in its handling of persons arrested and inmates held in its jail system.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Attorney General <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/thomas-e-perez\/\">Thomas E. Perez<\/a>, who heads the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/united-states-department-of-justice\/\">department<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/united-states-department-of-justice-civil-rights-division\/\">Civil Rights Division<\/a>, said investigators concluded there was reasonable cause to believe that sheriff\u2019s deputies engaged in a pattern or practice of unconstitutional conduct and violations of federal law that jeopardized the agency\u2019s commitment to fair and effective law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>The not-unexpected decision said investigators found discriminatory policing practices including unlawful stops, detentions and arrests of Latinos; unlawful retaliation against persons exercising their First Amendment right to criticize the agency\u2019s policies or practices, including its discriminatory treatment of Latinos; and <strong>discriminatory jail practices against Latino inmates with limited English proficiency by punishing them and denying them critical services.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The language aspect is an interesting twist.
