Sesame Street has a new muppet who is hungry for more than just cookies.<\/p>\n

The iconic kids show is set to unveil a new impoverished puppet named Lily, whose family faces an ongoing struggle with hunger issues…\u201cFood insecurity is a growing and difficult issue for adults to discuss, much less children,\u201d said the Paisleys in a statement. \u201cWe are honored that Sesame Street, with its long history of tackling difficult issues with sensitivity, caring and warmth asked us to be a part of this important project.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And, lest you not take this seriously….<\/p>\n

The special will share the stories of real-life families to raise awareness of hunger issues in the United States, as well as strategies that have helped these families find food. The United States Department of Agriculture estimates that 17 million American children \u2014 nearly 1 in 4 \u2014 have limited or uncertain access to affordable and nutritious food. Walmart is sponsoring the show as part of a $1.5 million grant toward the initiative and holding screenings in select communities.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

You know, I’d like to be nice, and say that I applaud Sesame Street for this and blah, blah, blah blah. But, I won’t, because I would be being dishonest.<\/p>\n

Until you’ve seen kids in the shitholes I have been to, you’ll have a hard time convincing me to take “food insecurity” in the US too seriously. There are simply too many avenues out there for parents who don’t have money. And all of them should be utilized. But all too often I see asshole parents who are buying their Gov’t cheese and a pack of cigarettes and a 6-pack of beer. I’m not going to be made to feel bad because other parents make shitty personal choices. Frankly, it just annoys the hell out of me.<\/p>\n

And I love that DoA is the one that does this story. Not like they have any vested interest in cooking the books on those stats do they? Look, I am all for well-fed children, but take a look at the damn DoA budget<\/a> and tell me there isn’t enough funds already in there to take care of kids.<\/p>\n

You want a safety net for these kids? How about churches, which offer this all the time. My church gives HUGE amounts of money to trying to get kids these lunches. I pay my taxes which go to this etc. Do I really need a TV show paid for with my tax money, augmented by a huge corporation that will make money on food sales, working together to make me feel bad for kids I don’t have?<\/p>\n

Somehow this whole thing pisses me off almost as much as the idiots who will be marching single-file through Indy this weekend. Maybe I will go down there and hand out apples and carrot sticks to make sure everyone is fully nourished.<\/p>\n

UPDATE: The Secretary of Agriculture emailed me a nasty note about my post, and said he spent 15 million looking at what will happen to this poor Muppet inside the year, and this is what he came up with:<\/p>\n
