The Associated Press<\/a> reports that former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld told the crew at Face the Nation this morning that he kept the Pentagon open on 9\/11\/2001 to send a message to the terrorists that they couldn’t close the US Defense Department with their vicious attack.<\/p>\n

Something else you might not know; the President kept the White House tours going in the days following the attack. In fact, it’s the only time in the 11 years that I lived in Washington that I toured the White House. My wife and I had just put our son on a bus back to Nebraska. He had been home on leave on September 11th for the first time since he joined the Air Force and was recalled to Offut AFB. The only transportation out of DC was a bus.<\/p>\n

We decided to take a walk around DC to see what was changing. When we got to the White House, there was no line at the East Gate, so I asked the Secret Service guy if the tours were still running and he told me that the President had ordered that the tours continued to send a message to the terrorists that life in DC continued as usual.<\/p>\n

So since no one else was in line, my wife and I walked right in after being grab-assed by the Secret Service. If the President wanted business as usual, I was on-board with him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
