Carlos Bledsoe, also known as Abdulhakim Muhammad, hoped his murder of a soldier at an Arkansas recruiting station and injuring another, would get him known as a foot soldier in the jihad against the United States. The State of Arkansas has robbed him of his grandiose vision, however. When he stand in front of the judge later this week, he’ll be a lowly murder suspect instead of a jihadist warrior for the Prophet. And given Arkansas’ record of putting 27 people to death since 1988, he might just feel the jerk of the rope or the prick of the needle. Stars and Stripes link<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“This case should be in federal or military court…” Muhammad, 26, objected in a letter to Circuit Judge Herbert Wright in May. “In my eyes it’s a sham trial set up only to make sure I’m handed down a death sentence.”<\/p>\n

Federal officials have mostly kept quiet about Muhammad’s case. The U.S. attorney in Little Rock declined to comment. But one person in federal law enforcement, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak before the trial, said the Justice Department and FBI were interested in pursuing charges but allowed the state to proceed after extensive negotiations with Arkansas prosecutors.<\/p>\n

Death penalty issues aside, some say prosecuting Muhammad on a capital murder charge has the benefit of deflating his grandiose self-perceptions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It’s unfortunate that the Department of Justice won’t recognize Bledsoe as a terrorist, but anything to make his life a little more miserable in the short time he has left is fine with me. That’s why i always refer to him as Carlos Bledsoe – just to irritate the little ratf**ker.
