He didn&#8217;t win either, but this piece is too good to ignore&#8230; if Afghanistan is on yer radar.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Afghanistan is a swirling eddy at the confluence of the rivers of  history. It is known for its harsh deserts, towering and impassible  mountain ranges, and lush, fertile river valleys. It broils in the  summer and freezes in the winter. Its people are farmers, herdsmen,  nomads, and merchants with physical features that vary from the dark  hair and eyes of a long lost Turkic forbear to the blond haired,  blue-eyed remnants of some dwindling Scythian line. Because of its  geographical location at the crossroads of Central Asia, Afghanistan has  been the unwitting host of foreign invaders since the time of Alexander  the Great and because the various invaders failed to raise a foreign  standard above Afghanistan that has endured until the present day,  people erroneously refer to Afghanistan as the \u201cGraveyard of Empires\u201d  (Jones xxxiv).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Sniper has a post up that is well worth the read.
