Terry Branstad on Thursday signed into law legislation that creates a criminal offense for anyone impersonating a decorated military veteran with the intent of deceiving others for monetary gain. <\/p>\n<p>The so-called \u201cstolen valor\u201d bill makes it a criminal offense to impersonate a decorated military veteran with the intent to deceive another person for the purpose of any real or anticipated monetary gain. <\/p>\n<p>The new crime is a serious misdemeanor punishable with a fine of at least $315 but not more than $1,875 and up to one year in prison. S.F. 397 defines a decorated military veteran as a former member of the U.S. armed forces who has been awarded any medal, decoration, badge, ribbon or button authorized by Congress or a military branch for meritorious service but struck language creating criminal offenses for falsely claiming receipt of certain military medals or decorations. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Good on Iowa. Other states like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lvrj.com\/news\/lawmakers-study-stolen-valor-bill-119515619.html\">Nevada<\/a> are also pushing their own stolen valor laws through their legislatures. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/southland-times\/news\/4940638\/Update-law-to-make-it-tougher-for-imposters\">New Zealand and Australia are also contemplating laws <\/a>to combat phonies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This bit of news from Iowa; Gov.
