Here is a quick <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/sol\/homepage\/news\/campaigns\/our_boys\/3210951\/Rambo-style-Gurkha-in-solo-Taliban-blitz.html\">background <\/a>behind the story. He was awarded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theblaze.com\/stories\/400-rounds-17-grenades-30-enemies-soldier-single-handedly-beats-back-taliban-barrage\/\">Conspicuous Gallantry Cross<\/a> for bravery for his actions. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sgt Pun told yesterday how he was on guard duty at the base near Rahim Kalay in Helmand Province on September 10 last year when he heard a digging sound in the darkness in front of him.<\/p>\n<p>Grabbing two radios, a GPMP machine gun, his <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SA80\">SA80 rifle<\/a>, a grenade launcher and an arsenal of hand-held grenades he climbed onto the rooftop and opened fire.<\/p>\n<p>With rocket propelled grenades and gun fire flying over his head from all directions he defended the position for more than 15 minutes, killing three Taliban and forcing the others to flee.<\/p>\n<p>At one point the diminutive soldier turned around to see a \u201chuge\u201d Taliban fighter approaching him on the rooftop, a few feet away, having silently scaled the wall, and shot him.<\/p>\n<p>While the mass of Taliban fired from an area of open ground, another crept into the compound and tried to climb the wall but he spotted him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried to fire my SA80 but it wouldn\u2019t work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if there was an obstruction or the magazine was finished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI threw my SA80 down and grabbed a sandbag but it wasn\u2019t tied and all the sand dropped out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I tried to jump into the sentry post I found a metal rod from the GPMG (machine gun) tripod and pulled it round and hit him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As he ran towards the Taliban fighter he gave a shout of \u201cMarchu Talai\u201d Nepalese for \u201cI\u2019m going to kill you.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It also seems that his unit has a proud history as well. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe Brigade of Gurkhas is one of the most decorated British Army Regiments and 13 of its soldiers have been awarded the Victoria Cross,\u201d the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/uknews\/defence\/5213891\/Gurkhas-Nepalese-fighters-with-a-long-history-of-loyalty-to-Britain.html\">Telegraph<\/a> says. \u201cThe Gurkha motto is \u2018Better to die than be a coward.\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Seems that he took that to heart that day. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just ran across this on Facebook.
