Michael Izbicki graduated from the Naval Academy and then got a degree in computer science at Johns Hopkins, and then he decided that being in the Navy is wrong.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Navy officers tried to persuade Mr. Izbicki to consider alternatives to discharge: Could he become a Navy medical officer or dentist? He replied that his pacifist beliefs were irreconcilable with any effort to prepare troops for battle. \u201cI could not contribute in any way whatsoever,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Izbicki said he had made no plans for the future other than a return to his parents\u2019 home in California. His discharge, he said, \u201chas opened the whole world up to me.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Funny how none of &#8220;his beliefs&#8221; occurred to him until he&#8217;d completed his studies and it was all paid for by the American taxpayer.
