Plans were soon scrapped in the face of an uproar among veterans.

Chavonne initially said a sister city could help heal old scars and promote a better understanding of Vietnamese culture. He said on Wednesday that the idea had become a distraction for what he hopes will be a major series of events next year for Vietnam veterans.

So now, Chavonne has an admirable idea – a “welcome home” for Vietnam veterans that they never got. But again, stomping on his dick, Chavonne invited the local Quaker pacifists contingent;

But he has quickly come under fire from veterans following a meeting Wednesday on the event. Chuck Fager led a small contingent representing the Quaker House, a military counseling center supported mostly by pacifists and peace activists that was active in Fayetteville during the Vietnam War.

Fager serves as director of the organization.

On Friday, Chavonne emphasized that the proposals Fager presented at the meeting were neither endorsed by him nor the homecoming committee.

Chavonne said he didn’t know Fager was going to discuss the idea of a series of films giving different viewpoints on Vietnam. Two of the proposed films, the anti-war “Coming Home” and “FTA,” feature actress Jane Fonda.

“That is not the intent of this mayor or committee to disgrace any veteran,” Chavonne said. “It’s part of what we’re trying to deal with. To a veteran, those words are inflammatory.”

Yes, who even knew that the mention of Jane Fonda would incite Vietnam veterans? Well, besides everyone on the fricken planet. Even talking to Quakers is liable to incite most veterans who’ve stood in counterprotests against them in the last decade. Lying, deceitful little toads that they are, James Branum, the Fort Hood lawyer who encourages desertion among soldiers for the cause is a Quaker in his home state of Oklahoma.

Chavonne is an idiot – we hear the “other side” of the Vietnam War every-fucking-day. I commend him for giving veterans a welcome home, but Jane Fonda? Seriously? Coming Home? FFS. What part of Jane Fonda is cathartic?

Fager said the mayor asked him to be a part of the events because he wanted the whole story about the war to be told. Quaker House was founded in 1969, organizing anti-war rallies and helping soldiers who want to get out of the military. Dissent over the Vietnam War is a big part of the conflict’s history, he said.

“And that’s just the truth. If people don’t like it, OK. But it’s still the truth,” Fager said,

No common sense whatsoever.

Thanks to 1stCavRVN11B for the link to Big Peace.

Tony Chavonne, a draft dodger and former protester against the war in Vietnam, is now mayor … F’ville mayor Chavonne invites pacifists to Vietnam veteran “Welcome Home”Read more

[8

post-21971","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-antiwar-crowd
["GET
