{"id":2071,"date":"2008-07-15T18:59:23","date_gmt":"2008-07-15T22:59:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=2071"},"modified":"2008-07-16T12:05:30","modified_gmt":"2008-07-16T16:05:30","slug":"do-we-really-have-to-take-him-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=2071","title":{"rendered":"Do we really have to take him back?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/bc-080714-war-resister-long1.jpg\" title=\"bc-080714-war-resister-long1.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/bc-080714-war-resister-long1.jpg\" title=\"bc-080714-war-resister-long1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/bc-080714-war-resister-long1.jpg\" alt=\"bc-080714-war-resister-long1.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>US Army deserter Robert Long was deported this morning from our newest ally to the north, Canada, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/RTGAM.20080715.wdeserter0715\/BNStory\/National\/?page=rss&amp;id=RTGAM.20080715.wdeserter0715\" target=\"_blank\">Globe and Mail <\/a>(h\/t to Darcey at right-of-center Canadian blog <a href=\"http:\/\/dustmybroom.com\/content\/view\/4662\/1\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dust My Broom<\/a>);<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>U.S. army deserter Robin Long was quietly deported from Canada Tuesday morning, while protesters unaware of his whereabouts picketed the Canada-U.S. border crossing south of Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can confirm that the removal took place but the Privacy Act prevents any discussion of the specifics of the case,\u201d Shakila Manzoor, a spokesperson for the Canada Border Services Agency, said today in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>She declined to say at what time he was sent back, where he crossed the border or who received him.<\/p>\n<p>A small group of supporters gathered early Tuesday morning at the Peace Arch border crossing, about an hour south of downtown Vancouver, for a symbolic protest against the deportation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.weaselzippers.net\/blog\/2008\/07\/us-war-deserter-loses-appeal-to-stay-in-canada-may-be-deported-tuesday.html\" target=\"_blank\">Weasel Zippers<\/a> had the announcement from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/canada\/british-columbia\/story\/2008\/07\/14\/bc-us-war-resister.html\" target=\"_blank\">CBC<\/a> that he would be deported this morning, but apparently Canadian authorities didn&#8217;t waste anytime scootin&#8217; his moldy, chickenshit ass back across the frontier.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A Federal Court judge in Vancouver on Monday rejected Robin Long&#8217;s application for a stay of his deportation order.<\/p>\n<p>The 25-year-old fled to Canada to avoid serving in Iraq. He was arrested in Nelson, B.C., last October on a Canada-wide warrant.<\/p>\n<p>Long had said he tried to gain refugee status in Canada because he believes he would suffer harm if he had to return to his home country.<\/p>\n<p>In her ruling, Federal Court of Canada Justice Anne Mactavish said Long did not provide clear and convincing evidence that he would suffer irreparable harm if he is returned home.<\/p>\n<p>Outside the court, one of Long&#8217;s supporters said he is unaware of any other recourse for Long and that he will likely be deported on Tuesday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I see he&#8217;s already cultivated that homeless phony vet look that seems to get the most alms outside of Union Station &#8211; he&#8217;s probably going to need another schtick to compete with other bums claiming to be veterans, though.<\/p>\n<p>I applaud the Canadian judicial system for making the legal decision and not the political one instead.
