One, there were no &#8220;Mexicans&#8221; <em>per se<\/em> until 1821 when the colony or viceroyalty known as New Spain became Mexico after a hard-fought war for independence. I mean if you&#8217;re going to use the term &#8220;America&#8221; to mean the United States, certainly you can&#8217;t use the term &#8220;Mexicans&#8221; to mean people who lived in a country that didn&#8217;t exist. They&#8217;re not a race, are they?<\/p>\n<p>Two, Mexicans consider themselves Americans, too. That&#8217;s why they call us <em>Norteamericanos<\/em> instead of Americans.
