As members of the oldest political party in the world, Democrats have responded to the call to move America forward for generations. Our history is much like that of democracy itself: imperfect but ultimately a force for incredible good in the world.<\/p>\n
I am a Democrat because progress is our heritage.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Yes, progress, that’s what Democrats are best known for. progress like slavery and starting a war to prevent the end of slavery. Progress like Jim Crow laws. Progress like founding the ku Klux Klan. Progress like trying to block the desegregation of the military. Progress like encouraging segregation in the South. Progress like trying to block the Civil Rights Acts of 1957 and 1964. Progress like 70% marginal tax rates. Yes, Bite-Me, that’s the kind of progress that the Democrat party is known for. But, I digress;<\/p>\n
But progress must also be our future. The centerpiece of our 2008 campaign was a pledge to change Washington. That was never just a question of new legislation or oversight. It meant changing how politics is practiced.<\/p>\n
That is why, with President Obama and other party leaders, I have worked to build today’s Democratic Party. Now, more than ever, Democrats are focused on organizing. Guided by the support of millions of Americans, we are working for change that matters in communities in every state.<\/p>\n
Neither Republicans nor Democrats can claim a monopoly on virtue, but as a party, Democrats have made a choice to take on the special interests to reduce the power they hold over the political system.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Yes, this administration has changed how business is being conducted in Washington. Instead of the special interests being exiled two blocks from the White House on K Street in Northwest DC, they sit on the Presidents cabinet. Good job, Joe.
