{"id":2027,"date":"2008-07-09T13:20:01","date_gmt":"2008-07-09T17:20:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=2027"},"modified":"2008-07-09T13:45:26","modified_gmt":"2008-07-09T17:45:26","slug":"how-my-bookstore-pissed-me-off-at-lunch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=2027","title":{"rendered":"How my bookstore pissed me off at lunch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Another\u00a0soft hitting account of life in the slow lane from the Oasis of Intertubes Intellectualism)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0There are no greater things in this world than bookstores and Irish Pubs.\u00a0 (Some Navy guys *cough* Nixon *cough* might suggest that brothels also rank, but not for this cat.)\u00a0 Seriously, you can nourish your soul with either a frothy Guinness, or a dog-earned copy of Cyrano de Bergerac.\u00a0 So, since liquid lunch on a Wednesday is not advisable (least not when my employers read this blog), off I sojourned to Borders books at lunch.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0When I say I love bookstores, I do not hyperbolize.\u00a0 You know when you meet someone of the opposite sex and you get all excited and wonder if your fly is down and keep reminding yourself not to stare, and need to go the bathroom?\u00a0 That&#8217;s me in bookstores (no lie) so I approach such an outing like an pirate ambush:\u00a0 Get in, get out, quit\u00a0 F__ing about, ya ho, ya ho, ya ho.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0So, I got to the &#8220;New in Hardcover&#8221; section, proudly proclaimed thusly by the cardboard sign affixed to the stand.\u00a0 (Stay with me people, there will eventually be a point to this.)\u00a0 I see nothing I don&#8217;t own, so I move on.\u00a0 But out of the corner of my eye, I see those &#8220;Recommendations&#8221; sections where the retarded girl with the nose piercing and glass eye tells you what she would read if she wasn&#8217;t busy sniffing glue.\u00a0 And next to this section was the &#8220;If you liked this book, you&#8217;ll LOVE these&#8221; section.\u00a0 And there I see <span id=\"btAsinTitle\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lone-Survivor-Eyewitness-Account-Operation\/dp\/0316067601\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1215621863&amp;sr=8-1\">Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10, by Marcus Luttrell<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0Now, if you haven&#8217;t read the book yet, you shouldn&#8217;t be on the internet.\u00a0 Seriously, you are an asshat and need to call in sick tomorrow, and not come back out into public until you&#8217;ve read it.\u00a0 Whether you support or oppose the war, the Bush Family Evil Empire or the Navy, everyone should read it.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve had the pleasure of talking to Marcus.\u00a0\u00a0Our conversations mainly dealt with me asking him if his combat situations had prepared him for what I assumed were droves (nay, legions) of women tossing their panties at him, whether he fashioned himself\u00a0the Tom Jones of our generation, and how willing he would be to share his cast offs with me.\u00a0 In turn, he looked at me while frantically waving down police officers to get mental health professionals to come deal with the dude who was clearly insane.\u00a0 None of which has anything to do with this post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So, anyway, what books do you think were there with Marcus&#8217;?\u00a0 Now bear in mind, if you liked Lone Survivor, you will LOVE ____.\u00a0 (read previous sentence in Gene Rayburn Match Game style.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The answer\u00a0in this particular\u00a0Borders Bookstore\u00a0was these three books:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>1) <span id=\"btAsinTitle\">Blackwater: The Rise of the World&#8217;s Most Powerful Mercenary Army, by Jeremy Scahill.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>2)\u00a0 <span id=\"btAsinTitle\">Warrior King: The Triumph and Betrayal of an American Commander in Iraq by Nathan Sassaman<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>3) <span id=\"btAsinTitle\">What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington&#8217;s Culture of Deception by Benedict Arnold McClellan.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>What in Spongebob&#8217;s blue ocean made the people at Borders think that someone reading Marcus&#8217; book would enjoy these unfortunate uses of trees?\u00a0 I can only assume that my borders is terminally infested with illiterates or those suffering either cranial rectal inversion or some other diminshed mental capacity ailment.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>\u00a0I would rather be a phrenologist reading the bumps on a homeless man&#8217;s skull than read those works.\u00a0 I would rather see my face on the cover of &#8220;Coming Out&#8221; magazine after a night of severe intoxication than read that stuff.\u00a0 I would rather show up for a date with Skye and have Chris Hanson come out and tell me to take a seat and ask me what I am doing there than read that crap.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>\u00a0For the record Borders Bookstore on 20th and M street, the proper responses to &#8220;If you liked Lone Survivor, you will LOVE ____&#8221; is:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>1) <span id=\"btAsinTitle\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/House-David-Bellavia\/dp\/B0017ODVOU\/ref=pd_sim_b_2\">House to House<\/a> by the incomparable David Bellavia.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>2) <span id=\"btAsinTitle\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Will-Autobiography-G-Gordon-Liddy\/dp\/0312119151\/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1215621959&amp;sr=1-2\">Will: The Autobiography of G.
