US launches strikes against Islamic State group in Nigeria after attacks target Christians<\/h3>\n

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) \u2014 President Donald Trump said the United States launched a \u201cpowerful and deadly\u201d strike against forces of the Islamic State group in Nigeria, after spending weeks accusing the West African country\u2019s government of failing to rein in the targeting of Christians.<\/p>\n

In a Christmas evening post on his social media site Thursday, Trump did not provide details or mention the extent of the damage caused by the strikes in the northwestern state of Sokoto.<\/p>\n

A Defense Department official, who insisted on anonymity to discuss details not made public, said the U.S. worked with Nigeria to carry out the strikes and that they\u2019d been approved by Abuja.<\/p>\n

Nigeria\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the cooperation included exchange of intelligence and strategic coordination in ways \u201cconsistent with international law, mutual respect for sovereignty and shared commitments to regional and global security.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This didn’t happen in a vacuum- in November Trump threatened both U.S. military intervention in Nigeria and withholding of all foreign aid if the killing of Christians continued, and he go in with \u201cguns-a-blazing\u201d to \u201ccompletely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.\u201d<\/p>\n
