Nuno F.G. Loureiro, 47, a nuclear scientist on MIT’s staff, was shot at his house in Brookline, MA (just outside Boston) on Monday. He died in hospital.<\/p>\n
Police initially theorized that the shooting could have been related to the Brown University shooting (I pooh-poohed the idea that shootings in two separate states would be linked, but I tend to forget that in little states like that the two locations are less than an hour apart.) This theory has been discounted, although the Brown shooing was at 4 PM and Loreiro’s shooting was hours later.<\/p>\n
\nShortly after news of Loureiro’s death spread, several MIT students gathered outside of his home to hold a candlelight vigil and remember his legacy.<\/p>\n
In addition to being a professor of nuclear science and engineering and physics, Loureiro was also the director of MIT\u2019s Plasma Science and Fusion Center. He was known for his work specifically with plasma dynamics, per his obituary in MIT News.\u00a0\u00a0People<\/a><\/p>\n
The accomplished scientist joined the MIT faculty in 2016 and “quickly became known as an imaginative scholar, gifted administrator and enthusiastic mentor,” MIT President Sally Kornbluth said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The university said Loureiro was a “faculty member in the departments of Nuclear Science & Engineering and Physics, as well as the Director of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center.”ABC News<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
At this time the police say there is no obvious suspect or motive.<\/p>\n
Israeli officials are examining intelligence from recent days that suggests an Iranian connection to the murder of Prof. Nuno Loureiro, a senior nuclear scientist at MIT, who was shot dead in his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, on Monday evening.Jerusalem Post<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
The authorities in the US have not endorsed this theory (as of this writing) and say they have no evidence which supports it.<\/p>\n
Professor Loreiro has spoken out in favor of Israel, however – were I conspiracy-minded, I would think him a perfect target for Iran in retaliation for the strikes on their nuclear facilities.<\/p>\n
However, informed sources have emphasized that at this stage, there is no unequivocal determination or evidence linking the murder to a state or intelligence operation.<\/p>\n
In the United States, authorities are maintaining ambiguity. According to official statements, all avenues of investigation, criminal and otherwise, are being examined, and evidence is being collected from the shooting scene and the immediate vicinity. Jerusalem Post<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
