Road rage incident at Wendy\u2019s in Fernley leads to gunfire and arrest of local man<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nA road-rage confrontation that escalated into gunfire outside a Wendy\u2019s in Fernley on Monday has ended with one man under arrest.<\/p>\n

The Lyon County Sheriff\u2019s Office says the incident unfolded around 2:25 p.m. on December 15, when reports of two to three gunshots came in from the parking lot next to the restaurant. Witnesses told dispatchers that two vehicles sped away eastbound on Main Street immediately after the shots were fired.<\/p>\n

A short time later, one of the drivers drove straight to the sheriff\u2019s substation in Fernley and called 911, telling dispatchers he fired his gun in self-defense. Deputies responded both to the substation and to Wendy\u2019s to begin their investigation.<\/p>\n

According to detectives, the confrontation stemmed from an unreported traffic incident two days earlier. On December 13, Austin Baker\u2019s wife was allegedly cut off by another driver, who yelled at her. She photographed the vehicle and showed it to Baker, who later recognized the car while driving with his wife and their 2-year-old child on December 15.<\/p>\n

Deputies say Baker followed the vehicle into the Wendy\u2019s parking lot, pulled in front of it to block it from leaving, then got out and began aggressively yelling and making threats at the other driver. That driver reportedly placed a handgun in his lap as Baker approached.<\/p>\n

Investigators say Baker then began punching the man repeatedly in the face and head, injuring his own hand in the process. The victim tried to shield himself, and his female passenger attempted to protect him as Baker continued the assault.<\/p>\n

During the struggle, the man grabbed the gun and fired two shots through the vehicle\u2019s door. One round lodged in the door, and the other missed Baker, hitting a dirt mound behind him. Baker then stopped the attack, allowing the man to drive off and head for the sheriff\u2019s substation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
