Detainees pepper-sprayed during protest at Florida immigration camp<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nDetainees at a state-run immigration detention camp in Florida were pepper sprayed in their housing quarters in October.<\/p>\n

According to documents obtained by the USA TODAY NETWORK \u2013 Florida and reports from immigrant advocates, in late October, officers at Baker Correctional Institution, also known as “Deportation Depot,” used OC gas (a form of pepper spray) on detained immigrants.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for the Florida Department of Emergency Management (FDEM), the agency in charge of the state-run immigration detention facility and also “Alligator Alcatraz” in the Everglades, confirmed the incident.<\/p>\n

“Detainees at Deportation Depot attempted to barricade themselves inside their housing unit while inciting violence and causing significant damage. After detainees refused multiple verbal commands to allow staff to enter, they deployed OC gas (pepper spray) to safely regain access,” spokesperson Stephanie Hartman said in an email.

\nAccording to the records obtained by the USA TODAY NETWORK \u2013 Florida, detainees at Deportation Depot on the evening of Oct. 29 were sent to their housing units early after complaining about the quality of food in the cafeteria during dinner.<\/p>\n

When back at their unit, the detainees started to protest.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
