Fatal Shooting Of Friend In Sublette County Ruled Self Defense<\/strong>
\nA special prosecutor ruled Tuesday that a Sublette County man who fatally shot his friend last July used reasonable defensive force as the other man swung an animal trap at him.<\/em><\/p>\n

\nA Sublette County man who fatally shot his friend July 11 in a Pinedale alleyway after a falling-out used reasonable force to preserve his life as the other man swung an animal trap at him, a special prosecutor has ruled.<\/p>\n

The Sublette County Sheriff\u2019s Office announced the decision Tuesday, about two weeks after special prosecutor and Natrona County District Attorney Dan Itzen issued it.<\/p>\n

Craig Rice and Paul Browning were friends \u201cfor a number of years,\u201d says Itzen\u2019s decision letter. \u201cThey had a falling out over several different issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

But, Browning had Rice\u2019s animal traps, and Rice had Browning\u2019s free weights sets, the letter adds.<\/p>\n

They arranged to return each other\u2019s property in the alley behind Rice\u2019s business, in Pinedale, on July 11.<\/p>\n

The town was bustling, as the exchange coincided with a summer rendezvous festival.<\/p>\n

Browning asked a third man to help him make the exchange.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe also referred to Mr. Rice as a (expletive),\u201d Itzen wrote.<\/p>\n

Browning\u2019s truck wouldn\u2019t start, so the third man used his truck to go to town with Browning.<\/p>\n

On the way to town, Browning noted that he didn\u2019t bring a knife or gun \u201cbecause he did not want trouble,\u201d wrote Itzen.<\/p>\n

At the alley, Browning grew upset because not all his weights were there.<\/p>\n

According to the third man, Itzen wrote, Rice and Browning started arguing, with each accusing the other of being a liar and thief.<\/p>\n

The third man could hear that Browning \u201cwas upset and talking towards Mr. Rice.\u201d Rice backed up and drew a gun, the letter says.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Rice shoots one time striking Mr. Browning in the chest,\u201d Itzen added.<\/p>\n

Rice noted that Browning held? one of the traps when he was shot.<\/p>\n

Law enforcement arrived to find Browning\u2019s body with one gunshot wound, and a trap next to the body, the prosecutor wrote.<\/p>\n

Investigators collected the trap, which weighed about 2 pounds.<\/p>\n

\u201cRice after the shooting retreated into his office building,\u201d wrote Itzen. \u201cOnce inside he told individuals that he felt threatened as Mr. Browning advanced on him.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
