Man arrested accused of shooting at off-duty Lubbock police officer<\/strong>

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A 51-year-old man has been arrested accused of shooting at an off-duty Lubbock police officer and his family Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Sylas Smart is charged with three counts of aggravated assault against a public servant and six counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.<\/p>\n

Just before 3:30 p.m., officers responded to a shots fired call at a home near 69th Place and Genoa Avenue.<\/p>\n

Investigators say it appears Smart was involved in a dispute with a woman at home in the area. During the dispute, Smart then went to an off-duty Lubbock police officer\u2019s nearby residence and was repeatedly ringing his doorbell camera.<\/p>\n

The off-duty officer responded to his home after seeing Smart on his doorbell camera app. Police say as the off-duty officer arrived in his personal car with his family inside, Smart, who was hiding behind a tree in the front yard, began firing shots at them.<\/p>\n

In an attempt to get to safety, the off-duty officer sped off in his vehicle driving through a fence at the end of a cul-de-sac.<\/p>\n

Shortly after, Lubbock police arrived and began searching the area for Smart. Police say Smart ran through the backyard of another home in the area and possibly got onto the roof.<\/p>\n

Smart then reportedly fired a shot at three officers as they were searching for him before running across an alleyway into a backyard of another home near 69th Place and Grover Avenue.<\/p>\n

Investigators say Smart kicked in the back door of the home where he encountered a 17-year-old resident inside. He then went through the front of the home and started running towards 69th Street.<\/p>\n

Thanks to witnesses in the area, police were able to locate Smart and took him into custody without incident. Smart dropped a handgun in the process, according to police.<\/p>\n

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the area to assist.<\/p>\n

Police say no one was injured during the incident.<\/p>\n

Smart faces additional charges including burglary of a habitation, unlawful carrying of weapons, unlawful possession of a firearm and evading arrest.<\/p>\n

His bond was set at $1 million.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
