Dateline Lansing, Michigan, in the Dwight Rich School of the Arts. Seems last May, a 12 year old boy brought a loaded handgun to school. I’m sure there is a logical reason for that… no, I really can’t think of one. Anyway, an 11 year old boy, Sakir McClurkin,\u00a0 who had already received some “hunting training” took the gun from the other boy, disasssembled it (? – do they mean he dropped the magazine?) and removed the ammunition therein.<\/p>\n
Seems like a good kid to do that, right? The kind of commonsense kid we need more of. The school district would disagree – they expelled him.<\/p>\n
Lansing mom Savitra McClurkin told local outlet WILX in a Sept. 19 interview that her 11-year-old son was expelled from Dwight Rich School of the Arts back in May after his classmate brought a gun to campus.<\/p>\n
Back in May, WLNS and the Lansing State Journal<\/em> reported that a disassembled, unloaded weapon was found inside the school. Police later arrested a 12-year-old boy, whose name has not been made public.<\/p>\n
McClurkin told WILX that her son allegedly spotted his classmate carrying the gun, and he used his hunting knowledge to disarm and disassemble the weapon before throwing away the bullets.<\/p>\n
“He didn’t want to implicate himself in it, nor did he want to tell on the person that actually brought the firearm,” she told the outlet. “Because he knows firearms aren’t supposed to be in school.”<\/p>\n
When school administrators eventually learned that the 11-year-old had handled the weapon, they expelled him for possessing a gun, removing him from school for one year, his mother said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
His mother even went to a Lansing school board meeting to protest. Seems that besides being a solid A\/B student, an athlete, and having no disciplinary background, he acted to defend his fellow students the way one would want him to, right?<\/p>\n
\n“Expulsion is never a decision the district takes lightly. It is always considered a last resort,” the statement continued. “However, Michigan law provides very clear direction in cases involving dangerous weapons. The investigation \u2014 which included statements and video evidence \u2014 left no ambiguity and required this outcome.”People<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Evidently the law doesn’t care if you actually protected your fellow students, and treats every kid like as guilty regardless of motive. Wonder what they might have said if the 12 year old had decided to shoot up the school instead? So this kid has to be homeschooled, his mother loses work time to do the homeschooling – if the kid was doing well in public school – how does this help the kid?\u00a0 \u00a0And the accredited homeschool folks don’t want Sakir either, so he is forced into a non-accredited program.<\/div>\n<\/div>\nThe other boy was arrested.
