This left a narrow path that contributed to the ability of the Spartans to take on a numerically larger Persian force. Today, the area where the battle took place shows dryland where the body of water was. Many argue that this was because of erosion from the mountains. However, the ruins of ancient ports in this area as well as in other areas are far away from the current shorelines.
