Court Says Nations Ignoring Climate Change Are Liable for Damages<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Lowell Cauffiel<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The United Nations\u2019 top court ruled Wednesday that countries harmed by the effects of \u201cclimate change\u201d could be entitled to reparations from countries that fail to \u201ctake appropriate action to protect the climate system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague also called a failure to take measures to protect the earth a potential violation of international law, according to reporting of the opinion by a variety of news outlets.<\/p>\n<p>The legal consequences resulting from the commission of an internationally wrongful act may include \u2026 full reparations to injured states in the form of restitution, compensation and satisfaction,\u201d the court said, according to extensive coverage by France24.<\/p>\n<p>The ICJ added, that a \u201csufficient direct and certain causal nexus\u201d had to be shown \u201cbetween the wrongful act and the injury.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFailure of a state to take appropriate action to protect the climate system \u2026 may constitute an internationally wrongful act,\u201d court president Yuji Iwasawa\u00a0said\u00a0during the hearing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/environment\/2025\/07\/23\/30592154un-court-says-nations-ignoring-climate-change-are-liable-for-damages\/\">Breitbart<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu sued due to concerns it could be destroyed by rising sea levels; 130 other countries agreed.<\/p>\n<p>The ICJ primarily arbitrates legal disputes among UN member nations that recognize its authority. Sadly, the United States withdrew from the court\u2019s compulsory jurisdiction in 1986 after the court ruled it owed Nicaragua war reparations.
