Army posts BACK to the names we are familiar with,\u00a0 SecDef Hegseth has re-named Ft. Moore to Ft. Benning.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe Army awarded CPL Benning the Distinguished Service Cross for his extraordinary heroism in action south of Exermont, France, on October 9, 1918,\u201d read a memo signed by Hegseth directing the change Monday. \u201cAfter the enemy killed his platoon commander and disabled two senior non-commissioned officers, CPL Benning took command of the surviving 20 men of his company, and courageously led them through heavy fire to their assigned objective in support of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So it&#8217;s back to being Ft. Benning, just not for <em>that<\/em> Benning.\u00a0 I guess this follows in the footsteps of his recent decision to rename Ft. Bragg to Ft. Bragg again.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The decision marks the second Army base Hegseth has renamed, after he announced last month he was renaming Fort Liberty, North Carolina, back to Fort Bragg \u2014 this time after a World War II soldier and Silver Star recipient, instead of the failed Confederate general.\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/defense-secretary-reverts-name-another-205852511.html\">CNN<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Under President Biden, beside Bragg and Benning, the following were renamed due to the Confederate nature of their names.<\/p>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<ul class=\"C4pYk iRNRX\">\n<li class=\"VP-ko\" dir=\"auto\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<p id=\"viewer-3qrrf\" class=\"j-JU7 WOBLT iRNRX KdLlf\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"eyR0C\"><strong>Fort Rucker, Alabama,<\/strong> renamed <strong>Fort Novosel<\/strong> in honor of Chief Warrant Officer 4 Michael Novosel, an Army aviator who earned the Medal of Honor for his actions in Kien Tuong Province, Vietnam.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"VP-ko\" dir=\"auto\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<p id=\"viewer-6e5ue\" class=\"j-JU7 WOBLT iRNRX KdLlf\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"eyR0C\"><strong>Fort Polk, Louisiana, <\/strong>renamed <strong>Fort Johnson<\/strong> in honor of Sgt. William Henry Johnson, a member of the famed &#8220;Harlem Hellfighters&#8221; from the New York Guard. Johnson earned the Medal of Honor for his actions in France\u2019s Argonne Forest during World War I.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"VP-ko\" dir=\"auto\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<p id=\"viewer-5o9tj\" class=\"j-JU7 WOBLT iRNRX KdLlf\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"eyR0C\"><strong>Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia,<\/strong> renamed <strong>Fort Walker<\/strong> in honor of Dr. Mary Walker, a Civil War hero and the only woman to receive the Medal of Honor.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"VP-ko\" dir=\"auto\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<p id=\"viewer-eb2k0\" class=\"j-JU7 WOBLT iRNRX KdLlf\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"eyR0C\"><strong>Fort Lee, Virginia,<\/strong> renamed <strong>Fort Gregg-Adams<\/strong> in commemoration of Lt. Gen. Arthur Gregg and Lt. Col. Charity Adams. Gregg, who retired in 1981, is considered one of the Army\u2019s great logistics leaders of the 20th century. Adams commanded the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the first and only all-Black, all-female American battalion deployed overseas during World War II.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"VP-ko\" dir=\"auto\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<p id=\"viewer-f0mom\" class=\"j-JU7 WOBLT iRNRX KdLlf\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"eyR0C\"><strong>Fort Pickett, Virginia,<\/strong> renamed <strong>Fort Barfoot<\/strong> in honor of Army Tech. Sgt. Van Barfoot, who received the Medal of Honor for his actions near Carano, Italy, while serving with the Guard\u2019s 45th Infantry Division during World War II.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"VP-ko\" dir=\"auto\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<p id=\"viewer-15fha\" class=\"j-JU7 WOBLT iRNRX KdLlf\" dir=\"\"><span class=\"eyR0C\"><strong>Fort Hood, Texas,<\/strong> renamed Fort Cavazos in commemoration of Gen. Richard Cavazos, who fought in Korea and Vietnam and was the Army\u2019s first Hispanic four-star general.&#8221; <strong><em>~<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>NGAUS\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militaryliving.com\/post\/the-army-s-nine-base-name-changes-are-complete\">Military Living<\/a><br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While not a particular fan of the whole base renaming effort, the only ones I ever set foot on were Benning and Hood, so no real dog in the fight. I was happy with Moore, and indifferent to most of the rest (but for Liberty &#8211; thousands of Airborne heroes and the best they could do was Liberty? How Newspeakish.)<\/p>\n<p>One question &#8211; it cost $40,000,000 to rename the posts &#8211; if we are embarking on some new era of fiscal austerity, why blow another $40 mill renaming &#8217;em back?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Doubling down on re-naming US.
