Man arrested in Redlands shootings, burglaries<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nMESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) \u2013 A suspect is in custody after reports of shots fired and burglary Sunday morning.<\/p>\n

Around 1:28 a.m., Mesa County deputies responded to the 400 block of 23 Road for a call of burglary and shots fired. An individual in the church reported a man allegedly broke into the building and fired several rounds at him, according to the Mesa County Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n

MCSO deputies and Grand Junction Police Department officers \u2013 who were in the area \u2013 surrounded the building. They noticed the front door and a window was shattered. After this observation, a shelter-in-place notice to homes in a one-block radius of the building while authorities searched for the suspect.<\/p>\n

Around 2 a.m., multiple gunshots were heard in the 500 block of 23 Road, according to the sheriff\u2019s office. Dispatch got a call from residents saying the suspect broke into their house and fired rounds at the homeowners. The residents returned fire before the suspect fled the home.<\/p>\n

Mesa County Sheriff\u2019s Office SWAT team was deployed to the house and extricated the homeowners out of precaution, MCSO said. Another shelter-in-place was sent to homes within a mile of the 500 block of 23 Road.<\/p>\n

Not long after, a homeowner \u2013 who woke up to the shelter-in-place notice \u2013 called dispatch, saying a male matching the suspect\u2019s description was checking car door handles on the 2300 block of South Rim Drive.<\/p>\n

MCSO deputies, GJPD officers and the Colorado State Patrol surrounded the suspect and took him into custody without incident. The suspect was identified as Grand Junction resident Dakota Mortensen, 22.<\/p>\n

He is currently being held at the Mesa County Detention Facility on these charges:<\/p>\n

Three counts of menacing with a real\/simulated weapon
\nThree counts of second-degree reckless assault with serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon
\nThree counts of criminal attempt
\nTwo counts of burglary with assaults, menaces or armed
\nTwo counts of criminal mischief ranging from $2,000-$5,000
\nImpersonating a police officer
\nThree counts of reckless endangerment
\nTwo counts of prohibited use of weapons<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nHOUSTON \u2014 Police are investigating a deadly shooting early Tuesday morning in southwest Houston, where a car owner shot and killed a man he allegedly caught burglarizing his vehicle.<\/p>\n

The incident happened just before 5 a.m. on Beechnut, west of Beltway 8 West, in the Alief area.<\/p>\n

According to Houston Police Department Det. Juan Diaz, the car owner was on his way to McDonald\u2019s when he saw the suspect sitting in his front seat, apparently rummaging through the vehicle.<\/p>\n

“The male responded somewhere along the lines of, if you are going to do it, just do it, and made a lunging motion,” Diaz said. “The vehicle owner at the time feared he was reaching for a weapon, discharged his firearm and struck the male in the car.”<\/p>\n

Before firing, the car owner went back to his apartment to retrieve a firearm and then returned to confront the suspect, police said.<\/p>\n

Investigators believe the suspect may have been trying to steal the car, not just burglarizing it.<\/p>\n

“He was in the front seat apparently rummaging through the car. From the looks of it, it appears he may have been attempting to steal the vehicle,” Diaz said.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
