JSO: Man driving car toward police shot multiple times, asked for cigarette after crawling from car<\/strong><\/p>\n

A man who police say accelerated his car toward officers was shot in the face several times in an officer-involved shooting on Tuesday afternoon in Oceanway.<\/p>\n

It happened on Gossett Street, which is near North Main Street and Duval Station Road.<\/p>\n

Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office Chief Allen Parker said an officer was following up on a traffic stop they conducted last week.<\/p>\n

The officer was familiar with the suspect, 29-year-old Michael Youmans, Parker said.<\/p>\n

Sgt. Ben Mcewan, who was with the officer, followed Youmans, who backed his car up to a fence.<\/p>\n

Mcewan asked Youmans to put his hands up, and Youmans reversed his car back a few feet.<\/p>\n

Parker said Mcewan asked Youmans to stop the car, and Mcewan then fired shots after Youmans began to accelerate toward him.<\/p>\n

Youmans came out of the car, crawling and \u201casking for a cigarette,\u201d Parker said.<\/p>\n

Parker said that Youmans was taken to the hospital and is stabilized.<\/p>\n

Youmans\u2019 criminal history includes charges of theft, drug possession, resisting arrest with and without violence, fleeing and eluding, burglary, and trespassing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
