By a vote of 52-48, the Senate confirmed Tulsi Gabbard to be President Donald Trump’s national intelligence director. Senator Mitch McConnell voted alongside the Democrats against Gabbard’s confirmation. The Republicans had to invoke cloture to make this vote possible. The Republicans may possibly invoke cloture on behalf of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for health secretary. Gabbard will now overlook the CIA, FBI, and the NSA.<\/p>\n

As director, Gabbard will oversee 18 intelligence agencies including the CIA, FBI and National Security Agency (NSA) and manage a budget of more than $70bn (\u00a355bn).<\/p>\n

Trump tapped the military veteran for her “fearless spirit”, he said in a statement, in line with several of his other cabinet picks who he sees as disrupting the Washington establishment.<\/p>\n

But the former Democrat stands out as one of Trump’s most disputed nominees.<\/p>\n

Gabbard faced a contentious confirmation hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee at the end of January where committee members grilled her on past comments about government whistleblower Edward Snowden, her views on the government’s surveillance authority and her relationships with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syria’s former dictator Bashar al-Assad.<\/p>\n

During one heated exchange, lawmakers repeatedly pushed Gabbard to answer whether she considered Snowden – who leaked classified documents alleging the US was conducting illegal surveillance – a traitor to the US. Gabbard had previously called him “brave” and argued he should be pardoned for his crimes.<\/p>\n

She refused to give a “yes” or “no” answer, raising scepticism among some Republicans.<\/p>\n

But it wasn’t enough to deter their votes. She later passed a committee vote along party lines.<\/p>\n

After her failed bid for president in the 2020 election, Gabbard turned into one of Trump’s most loyal backers. She left the Democratic party in 2022 and registered as an independent, and then became a contributor on Fox News where she was an outspoken Trump supporter.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
