Mexican officials are pondering if this is serious, or if it is a ploy to get the Mexican government to do something substantive. This action would have ramifications that may end up working against us. However, Trump voiced other methods that he would also use. One tactic involves putting Mexican officials on blast for choosing drug cartel interests over controlling drugs and illegal immigration.

From The Wall Street Journal:

During his campaign, Trump said he would take military action against cartels, impose a naval embargo to prevent drugs from crossing the border and designate cartels and their leaders as foreign terrorists. Separately, the Republican president-elect has threatened 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico if the country doesn’t stop the flow of migrants and fentanyl. The Republican Party’s platform includes use of the military at the border.

In response, Sheinbaum has rushed to show her administration isn’t soft on drugs and migrants. Her government has gone after fentanyl smugglers in Mexico’s powerful Sinaloa cartel, seizing 1.3 tons of the drug in a record bust. She has sent her security minister to Sinaloa to oversee the efforts to take back control of a state where organized crime dominates the political establishment and two factions are in a turf war.

Mexico is in talks to set up a unit of elite security officers who would be vetted and trained by U.S. law-enforcement officials for operations against criminals in Mexico, according to Mexican officials.

Trump signaled that security would be the prime focus of the two countries’ relationship with his nomination of Ron Johnson as U.S. ambassador to Mexico. Johnson is a former Green Beret and U.S. intelligence officer with wide experience in Latin America.

Johnson was an adviser to El Salvador’s army during that country’s civil war in the 1980s, and served as U.S. ambassador to El Salvador during Trump’s first term. Now, many expect him to play an important role in formulating Mexico’s security strategy as it confronts organized-crime groups that control smuggling and migrant routes to the U.S. Sheinbaum’s security minister, Omar García Harfuch, worked closely with U.S. security agencies when he was head of Mexico City’s police.

“This ambassador will be a de facto part of Mexico’s security cabinet,” said Eduardo Guerrero, a Mexico City-based security analyst.

Additional Reading:

Córdoba, J.
