Iraq\u2019s parliament, which is dominated by a coalition of conservative Shia Muslim parties, is preparing to vote through an amendment that would overturn the country\u2019s \u201cpersonal status law\u201d.<\/p>\n

The legislation, also known as Law 188, was heralded as one of the most progressive in the Middle East when it was introduced in 1959 and provides an overarching set of rules governing the affairs of Iraqi families, regardless of their religious sect.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Iraq already has high rates of child marriage. According to the United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (Unicef), some 28 per cent of women in Iraq are married by 18.<\/p>\n

This is because of a loophole in the personal status law which allows religious leaders, instead of the courts, to officiate thousands of marriages each year \u2013 including those involving girls as young as 15, with permission from the father.<\/p>\n

These unregistered marriages are widespread in economically poor, ultra-conservative Shia communities in Iraq.<\/p>\n

But because the nuptials are not recognised by law, the girls and any children they have are denied a plethora of rights.<\/p>\n

For example, hospitals can refuse women admitted for childbirth without a marriage certificate.\u00a0 The Telegraph<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.<\/u>, drew mockery on social media after news broke the college invited students to a “self-care suite” on Wednesday to recover from the stress of the 2024 presidential election.<\/p>\n

Students at Georgetown’s McCourt School of Public Policy were reportedly offered treats like “milk and cookies” and “hot cocoa” as well as “Lego” toys and “Coloring and Mindfulness Exercises” to get their minds off the election results.<\/p>\n

The Harvard Crimson reported that several professors in the Sociology, Math and General Education Departments at Harvard University canceled classes that day, made attendance optional or extended assignment deadlines.\u00a0 Fox News<\/a><\/p>\n
