Armed man breaks into South Portland home, police standoff ensues for several hours<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nPORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) \u2014 A man armed with a knife was arrested Saturday morning after breaking into a South Portland house and barricading himself there for several hours the night before, police said.<\/p>\n

Just after 11:30 p.m. Friday, officers responded to a call reporting banging sounds outside of a home in the 2400 block of Southwest 5th Avenue.<\/p>\n

On arrival, they said they found a man \u2013 identified as 55-year-old Aaron Onufrock \u2013 had broken into the home\u2019s basement. Officials said Onufrock had a knife in his hand and repeatedly refused to come out of the basement after several attempts at negotiation.<\/p>\n

SERT and CNT officials then responded to the scene and the home\u2019s residents were evacuated. Streets around Southwest 5th Avenue and Southwest Caruthers Street were also closed off.<\/p>\n

Authorities said the negotiations with Onufrock continued for several hours. At one point, officials said he even started a fire that burned a door in the basement.<\/p>\n

After officials said Onufrock refused to come out for another several hours, officers used pepper spray to attempt to coax him out at around 6 a.m. When he still stayed put, officers deployed \u201cirritant gas\u201d in the basement, police said.<\/p>\n

At 6:40 a.m., Onufrock dropped the knife, surrendered to officers and was taken to a hospital for medical evaluation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

No word on removing residual irritant gas from the basement- bet the homeowners would have preferred if the Po-Po had tazed Mr. Onufrock instead.<\/p>\n

One Shot and Killed over a Cup of Ice in Adams County<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nOn Friday, October 25, 2024, at approximately 7:20 pm, the Adams County Sheriff\u2019s Office received a 911 call about a subject being shot in the Shell Station in Washington located at 787 Highway 61 North. A deputy, who was approximately 1 block away, was stopped by a passing motorist about the same time and was advised that people were shooting at each other at the Shell station.<\/p>\n

When deputies arrived, one suspect found sitting by the gas pumps was detained and a semi-automatic firearm was seized. Deputies observed one victim, who had been fatally shot, lying on the floor inside the store. The victim was later identified as James Keating.<\/p>\n

Sheriff Patten stated this appears to be a senseless act of violence that will forever change two families\u2019 lives. The shooter had placed a cup of ice down while inside the store with other customers. The victim entered the store and retrieved a few drinks when he accidentally knocked the cup over. An argument ensued after the shooter implied he had a weapon but never pulled or pointed it at the victim. Keating then left the store and retrieved a handgun from his vehicle. Once he re-entered the store, he immediately confronted the shooter. The argument turned physical when Keating assaulted the shooter and the shooter in return, shot Keating multiple times.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
