Family of taekwondo instructors saves Texas woman from sexual assault<\/strong>

The piercing scream, like a sound from a horror film, triggered taekwondo instructor Simon An to draw on his years of martial arts training.<\/p>\n

Around 4 p.m. Tuesday, shortly after the doors of his family-owned and -operated studio in Texas opened for evening classes, An and his father, his mother, his older sister and his younger brother heard shrieks coming from a neighboring business.<\/p>\n

The family of five, each with a fourth-degree black belt, run the Yong-in Taekwondo studio in Katy, outside Houston. They initially ignored the sounds, assuming they came from employees playing around in their break room. But then a piercing \u201cfinal scream\u201d prompted the family into action, An said.<\/p>\n

His family ran to the store and opened a door. There they found a man on top of a young woman with his hands \u201cin [in]appropriate places\u201d as she attempted to fend him off, An said.<\/p>\n

An\u2019s father, Hong, yanked the attacker away by his shirt and pinned him to the ground. An\u2019s sister, Hannah, grabbed the girl and rushed her out of the room while An and his brother helped subdue the attacker.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt just happened so sudden,\u201d said An, who has been practicing taekwondo for 16 years. \u201cIt was all self-defense. The intruder was trying to run away \u2014 scratching, biting, anything he could do.\u201d<\/p>\n

But An\u2019s dad, a taekwondo grand master, held down the attacker for 10 minutes until law enforcement arrived, he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Lake Wales man fatally shot after threatening another man while armed, PCSO says<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Lake Wales man was fatally shot Tuesday night after he confronted another man outside a residence while armed, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.<\/p>\n

According to a Sheriff’s Office news release, Vincent Thomas Jr., 21, and at least three other people drove to a home on Northside Drive in Lake Wales about 7 p.m. There, Thomas got out of the car armed with a handgun and confronted Bernard Smith, 20, outside the home, threatening to shoot him.<\/p>\n

The Sheriff’s Office said Smith and Thomas went to Lake Wales High School together and had a disagreement.<\/p>\n

During the argument, Smith armed himself with a rifle and shot at Thomas several times, hitting him at least twice, the Sheriff’s Office said. Smith remained at the scene and cooperated with detectives.<\/p>\n

Thomas was taken to AdventHealth Lake Wales hospital by his friends, where he died. Two of those friends \u2014 Jacaree Taylor, 19, and Dairius Williams, 23, both of Lake Wales \u2014 were arrested on charges of tampering with evidence and providing false information to law enforcement during a felony investigation, the Sheriff’s Office said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
