Seems daily that I see “first black XXX”” or “pioneering black XXX dies” – I guess it is just the timing. It was in the ’50s and ’60s\u00a0 when desegregation really became an issue, and I guess the march of time makes many of those folks prone to leaving us now that they are in their ’80s and ’90s.<\/p>\n
Me, I was in two different schools the years they got their first-ever black students, my junior high and high school. But I was in a city that was spared most of the rioting and conflict that flared up then. But on to someone important:<\/p>\n
\nWilliam Goines, the man credited with being the first Black Navy SEAL in the modern SEAL team era, passed away Monday, June 10,\u00a0the U.S. Naval Institute confirmed.\u00a0He was 88 years old.<\/p>\n
Born in 1936, Goines\u2019 childhood in Lockland, Ohio, was spent in a segregated community where the town\u2019s lone public pool may as well have been a myth, Goines told the\u00a0Cincinnati-based Enquirer\u00a0in 2016.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were never allowed to swim in that pool,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen integration came to the area, the way I understand it, they filled the pool in with rocks and gravel so nobody could swim in it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Yet the Ohio native was drawn to the water. Inspired to join the Navy after watching the film \u201cThe Frogmen\u201d \u2014 about underwater demolition operations during World War II \u2014\u00a0Goines enlisted in 1955 at the age of 19.<\/p>\n
Yet race once again almost kept Goines from his calling.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey tracked all African Americans to go into the steward rating, which was waiting on officers, cooking for officers,\u201d he told the Enquirer. \u201cThey tried to track me into that, but I had a guy in my hometown in Lockland who said, \u2018Whatever you do, don\u2019t accept a school for stewards because all you\u2019re going to be is a servant for officers.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
\nHe took his friend\u2019s advice and, after an 11-month tour in Malta, Goines was among the first group chosen to serve on the newly established SEAL teams. Of the 80 men selected upon the official 1962 inception of the teams, Goines was the only Black man.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
You’ll note that ‘modern’ up top – another black man, Fred\u00a0 ‘Tiz’ Morrison is credited with being the first black UDT diver, but that was WWII\/Korea, pre-“Modern” SEALs .<\/p>\n
\nGoines went on to serve three tours in Vietnam with SEAL teams before serving five years with the Chuting Stars, a Navy Parachute Demonstration Team.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe jumped out of everything,\u201d he told the Enquirer. \u201cWe even jumped out of balloons in France and Belgium, just experimenting.\u201d<\/p>\n
After 32 years of service, Goines retired in 1987 as a master chief petty officer. His many commendations include the Bronze Star, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, a Combat Action Ribbon, and the Presidential Unit Citation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
He didn’t stop serving there.<\/p>\n
\nFollowing his retirement, Goines remained devoted to his nation and community, first working as the police chief in the Portsmouth, Virginia, school system for more than a decade, and later volunteering to help recruit minorities into the SEALs, according to\u00a0the Virginian-Pilot.<\/p>\n
Reflecting on his life in 2016, Goines stated that despite myriad challenges \u2014 including prostate cancer possibly linked to Agent Orange \u2014 \u201cI\u2019ve enjoyed my life immensely. Of all the things that I\u2019ve been through, I don\u2019t regret anything.\u201d<\/p>\n
