Natural problems like storms or even volcano eruptions\u00a0 are problematic (you try turning 8,000 rpm while inhaling sand!)\u00a0 People problems like annnoying passengers, entitled idiots, sickness, or skyjackings to some third world shithole can occur (and I suspect that last will come back when ID-less Pre-check spreads (Business Insider).\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n Normally your pilots can at least talk to the ground and know where they are…mostly.<\/p>\n GPS disturbances have been recorded almost every day this year in the Arctic Circle region where Norway and Finland border Russia, Dagens N\u00e6ringsliv reported, citing the Norwegian Communication Authority.<\/p>\n The Barents Observer said that incidents of GPS jamming nearly doubled after Russia launched its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with 122 recorded in that year and 294 in 2023.<\/p>\n The disturbances come as Russia deploys electronic warfare units to fend off Ukrainian drone attacks on its cities, airports, and oil and gas industry in the far north of the country.<\/p>\n Electronic warfare units are able to scramble the coordinates used to guide drones to their targets, the reports said, and are affecting GPS coordinates across the whole region.<\/p>\n According to reports in Russia, the signals are so strong Russia is turning off the internet in some regions to prevent interference.<\/p>\n “We depend on good GPS signals to quickly locate areas with people missing in extreme weather like we have today,” Deputy Chief of Police Trond Eirik Nilsen with Finnmark Police District said to the\u00a0publication.<\/p>\n Some security officials believe that the interferences are part of deliberate tactics by Russia to intimidate NATO countries.\u00a0 Business Insider<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n ‘Way back when an acronym called MIJI was drummed into EW folks’ heads. J<\/strong>amming is sending overriding or deceptive signals to directly screw up comms – which is a lot of what Russia is doing. I<\/strong>nterference is inducing spurious noise in their electronics or comms.<\/p>\n That Russia is pulling such potentially lethal games with NATO allies should tell you something…essentially about the only international convention they haven’t broken in the last three years is actually launching a nuke.
