This flag, a potent symbol of American history and the sacrifices of those who served, was intended to fill a void in the museum&#8217;s military exhibits, particularly concerning the Vietnam War.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/bnnbreaking.com\/world\/us\/a-flags-journey-from-vietnam-war-symbol-to-antioch-museums-controversial-exhibit\">bnnbreaking.com<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Greenwalt told a rousing tale:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>He was one of the last American troops to leave Vietnam, he said, and brought the flag that kept him company during combat home with him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He told a story that he had the flag around his neck when he left and got out of there. It was one of the last flags to leave Vietnam&#8221;\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 Bill Fraga, former Antioch Historical Museam volunteer and veteran.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressreader.com\/usa\/the-mercury-news\/20240224\/281517936057264\"> Mercury News<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fraga didn\u2019t think to question it, given Greenwalt\u2019s status with the local American Legion.<a href=\"https:\/\/news.cibassoc.org\/a-museum-proudly-displayed-an-american-flag-rescued-from-the-fall-of-saigon-but-the-soldiers-story-wasnt-true\/\">CIBAssoc.org<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Got a fair amount of attention at the time, evidently.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Vietnam Veterans Appreciation Barbecue, held in conjunction with the flag&#8217;s donation, brought together around 120 individuals, including Medal of Honor recipient Ty Carter, veterans, and community members.<\/p>\n<p>However, the narrative surrounding the flag began to unravel as investigations revealed that Greenawalt, despite his claims, likely never served in Vietnam. Military records indicated he was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War, casting doubt on the authenticity of his story and the flag&#8217;s provenance.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/bnnbreaking.com\/world\/us\/a-flags-journey-from-vietnam-war-symbol-to-antioch-museums-controversial-exhibit\">bnnbreaking.com<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Given that Marines were the last to leave, probably red flags should have been raised at the time &#8211; but in such a chaotic event details slip through the cracks.
