Danielle DeFant<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Report: Fired USS Lake Erie captain instilled a \u2018culture of fear\u2019<\/h3>\n<p><strong>By Sarah Sicard<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The commanding officer of the cruiser Lake Erie fostered a hostile environment on the ship by tormenting crew members before she was relieved of duty in October, according to a Navy investigation obtained by Navy Times.<\/p>\n<p>Capt. Danielle DeFant \u2014 who commanded the ship for roughly 14 months \u2014 was ousted following an investigation that began after three unnamed subordinates aired grievances about \u201ctoxic command climate and\/or sexual discrimination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Freedom of Information Act request filed by KPBS in San Diego first revealed details of the Navy\u2019s investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The probe reveals instances where DeFant screamed at and berated subordinates \u2014 particularly the officers \u2014 creating a \u201ctoxic\u201d situation.<\/p>\n<p>Captain DeFant\u2019s behavior consisting of yelling, profanity, and public admonishments has contributed to a culture of fear onboard,\u201d the investigation states.<br \/>\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<br \/>\nThis excessive use of physical force was classified as battery per Article 128 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the investigation states.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The report found DeFant publicly grabbed or struck her officers, alienated the Chief\u2019s Mess, overreacted to minor transgressions, and failed to mention abysmal command climate results when briefing superiors. This type of behavior didn&#8217;t just happen in a vacuum, yet she obviously screened for command. In the new military DEI reality one can&#8217;t help but wonder how much &#8220;help&#8221; she received along the way. This doubt is the poison of Affirmative Action.
