Al-Jazeera reports that Iran has dispatched a destroyer, to the Red Sea in response to “heightened tensions” in the area.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Alborz destroyer entered the Red Sea \u2026 by passing through the Bab al-Mandeb\u201d waterway at the southern tip of the Red Sea, connecting with the Gulf of Aden in the Indian Ocean, the news agency said on Monday.<\/p>\n

It added that Iran\u2019s naval fleet has been operating in the area \u201cto secure shipping lanes, repel pirates, among other purposes since 2009\u201d.<\/p>\n

In 2021, the Alborz repulsed a pirate attack against two oil tankers in the Gulf of Aden.<\/p>\n

And in 2015, it was one of two Iranian warships sent to the strait \u201cto ensure the safety of commercial ships\u201d in what was seen at the time as a sign of tensions with Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n
