By Snejana Farberov<\/strong><\/p>\n A US Army soldier who had been punished for misconduct while stationed in South Korea and ordered to go home has been detained in North Korea after straying across the border without permission during a tour, the United Nations Command said Tuesday.<\/p>\n The detainee has been identified as Travis King, a US Army member with the rank of private second class, reported South Korea\u2019s Dong-a Ilbo newspaper, citing South Korea\u2019s army.<\/p>\n King was taking part in a visit to the Joint Security Area \u2014 the border village in the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas that is guarded by soldiers from both sides \u2014 when he made the \u201cdeliberate decision\u201d to cross the border around 3:27 p.m. local time, officials said.<\/p>\n Officials have yet to say how King eluded officials at the airport and made his way to the demilitarized zone to join the tour.<\/p>\n An eyewitness who was part of the same tour group as King told CBS News that they had just visited one of the buildings at the JSA village when \u201cthis man [King] gives out a loud \u2018Ha, ha, ha,\u2019 and just runs in between some buildings. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n
