Ann Arbor Police Officers Ordered To Stop Making Traffic Stops For \u2018Minor\u2019 Offenses<\/h3>\n

Drivers who commit so-called \u201cminor\u201d traffic violations in Ann Arbor no longer have to worry about being pulled over by police, thanks to a unanimous vote by the Ann Arbor City Council on Monday.<\/p>\n

The council fully backed the \u201cdriving equality ordinance,\u201d which blocks law enforcement officers from enforcing traffic violations such as expired registration, cracked taillights, or a cracked windshield, among other offenses, The Michigan Daily reported.<\/p>\n

Councilmembers have accused Ann Arbor police of using such infractions to target people of color and those with disabilities.<\/p>\n

\u201cHistorically, slave patrols in the antebellum south have the responsibility of apprehending runaway slaves and throwing them to jail,\u201d Councilmember Cynthia Harrison declared during the meeting, according to The Michigan Daily.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the Civil War, these patrols were done under a new name, transforming it to what we recognize today as formal police departments,\u201d Harrison continued. \u201cWe know that the history of American policing is not a relic of the past, but an ongoing narrative.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Man jailed for performing sex act while kneeling over captured seagull<\/h3>\n

A man who admitted performing a sex act while kneeling over a baby seagull that he had captured has been jailed for 24 weeks.<\/p>\n

David Lee, 40, held the bird between his legs while he carried out the act on himself.<\/p>\n

He was watching pornography at the time.<\/p>\n

The incident, which took place in a backstreet in Sunderland in August last year, was caught on CCTV.<\/p>\n

When Lee was arrested at a nearby takeaway, he claimed he was trying to help the seagull because he believed it was hurt.<\/p>\n

He denied that he was watching pornography at the time, and claimed instead that he was searching for a vet’s phone number.<\/p>\n

However, police checks later revealed he was looking at adult websites.<\/p>\n

Lee, of Sunderland, appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court in April, when he pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to the bird.<\/p>\n

Magistrates handed him an immediate 24-week jail term and banned him from keeping animals for 10 years today.<\/p>\n

A psychiatric report found he suffered from an unstable personality disorder and was detached from reality.<\/p>\n

He was also a pathological liar whose lies served no purpose, the court heard.<\/p>\n

Annalisa Moscardini, defending, said Lee was a heavy drinker who experienced blackouts.<\/p>\n

“He accepts he must have done this act but he didn’t have a good recollection of it,” she said in explanation of his initial denials.<\/p>\n

“To some extent he cannot explain what happened.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
