Drag show ban complicates Pride celebrations at US bases in Japan<\/h3>\n

YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan \u2014 Canceling drag shows on U.S. military bases constitutes discrimination and misinterprets an art form that\u2019s been part of the military for more than 100 years, according to event organizers at installations in Japan.<\/p>\n

President Joe Biden\u2019s administration banned drag shows on U.S. military bases on June 1, the start of Pride Month, following criticism from Republican lawmakers amid a general campaign against LGBTQ+ events, The Associated Press reported.<\/p>\n

Hosting drag shows is inconsistent with regulations governing the use of Defense Department resources, according to a statement from Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh on June 1.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnacting this policy on the first day of Pride Month truly added insult to injury,\u201d said Xander Ready, president of Out in Oki, a private organization registered with the 18th Force Support Squadron at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
