Man injured after unholstered gun accidentally discharges on college campus, police say<\/h3>\n

A 41-year-old man was injured after police said an unholstered firearm he was carrying in his waistband discharged as he walked through a parking lot of Daytona State College\u2019s Daytona Beach campus.<\/p>\n

Officers with the Daytona Beach Police Department were dispatched to the college just after 12:30 on Tuesday where they found the man, identified as Joseph A. Delbuono, unconscious and lying on top of the firearm. The firearm \u2013 a 9mm Sig Sauer \u2013 discharged for an unknown reason, resulting in a wound to Delbuono’s thigh.<\/p>\n

Daytona Beach Fire Department and EVAC transported Delbuono, who is a student at the college, to Halifax Health Medical Center in critical condition.<\/p>\n

During a news conference, Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari E. Young said Delbuono was running late for a class and was racing across the parking lot when the gun discharged.<\/p>\n

“Hopefully he pulls through because we are very anxious to speak to him,” Chief Young said. “We checked his car and there were some extra magazines inside his car, some extra ammunition, but there were also some targets in the vehicle as well as if he could have gone to the range recently.”<\/p>\n

Delbuono is charged with possession of a firearm on a school campus, a third-degree felony.<\/p>\n

This incident is currently under investigation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Emily Police Department ‘temporarily deactivated’; chief on leave over alleged theft<\/h3>\n

The police chief of a small, north-central Minnesota town is on administrative leave after allegedly stealing almost $1,000 worth of the herbal extract Kratom from a local business.<\/p>\n

According to Crow Wing County court records, 38-year-old Damien Stalker is accused of taking the product from the store without paying for it from Feb. 1 to Feb. 27. Court records say the items allegedly taken by Stalker amounted to a total of $942.<\/p>\n

In April, Stalker was charged with one count of gross misdemeanor theft.<\/p>\n

According to the Mayo Clinic, Kratom is sold as a supplement and used for “mood enhancement and fatigue reduction.” However, the clinic says its effectiveness and safety have long been debated.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors say that when authorities confronted Stalker about the items, he admitted to taking the products from the store without paying, but insisted he was “going to pay the business back.” Court documents say Stalked then claimed to have an arrangement with the business for later payment.<\/p>\n

The manager of the store, however, told investigators that the arrangement did not exist.<\/p>\n

On March 1, the city called an emergency council meeting, in which the council and mayor discussed the next steps for both Stalker and the police department. Stalker was subsequently placed on leave with pay and benefits, pending the outcome of the investigation, while the city’s police department was “temporarily deactivated.”<\/p>\n

In the interim, the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office was put in place to serve over the jurisdiction.<\/p>\n

Stalker had been with the department for eight years before becoming chief in 2022.<\/p>\n

His first hearing is scheduled for May 10. He remains on administrative leave.<\/p>\n

Emily, population 843 at the time of the 2020 census, is located about 150 miles north of the Twin Cities and 30 miles northeast of Brainerd.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Man in beer costume arrested for DUI, sheriff\u2019s office says<\/h3>\n

A man dressed up in a beer costume was arrested in Kansas after a routine traffic stop.<\/p>\n

The Franklin County Sheriff\u2019s Office was alerted to a possible drunken driver Friday.<\/p>\n

The sheriff\u2019s office said in a Facebook post a deputy was able to find the suspected driver on Interstate 35 and pulled him over.<\/p>\n

When the driver stepped out for a sobriety test, he was wearing a Bud Light costume.<\/p>\n

According to the sheriff\u2019s office, the driver was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and was taken to jail.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Correctional officer charged with trafficking fentanyl<\/h3>\n

A correctional officer at Lee Correctional Institution [Wisconsin] was arrested and charged Monday with trafficking fentanyl, providing prisoners with contraband and criminal conspiracy.<\/p>\n

The South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) Inspector General said 26-year-old Alkeena Eu-Neiger Hackett was found trying to bring a metal grill mouthpiece into Lee Correctional Institution (LCI) hidden in her hair on Wednesday, May 3 while being scanned in for her shift.<\/p>\n

Officials said they found a rock-like substance weighing 129 grams that field tested positive for fentanyl in her car after further investigation.<\/p>\n

The Lee County Sheriff\u2019s Office assisted with Hackett\u2019s arrest.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

St. Cloud police officer arrested \u2014 in her own handcuffs \u2014 for stealing dead man’s credit card<\/h3>\n

A St. Cloud [Florida] Police officer has been arrested and subsequently terminated for stealing and using credit card information she obtained from a deceased person at the scene of a medical emergency.<\/p>\n

St. Cloud Police Chief Doug Goerke and Osceola Sheriff Marcos Lopez jointly announced that Officer Dianne Ferreira, 25, was arrested Tuesday and charged with theft of credit card information with intent to use, fraudulent use of a credit card over $200 (both felonies) and use of personal ID of a deceased person. She was held on a $4,000 bond that Osceola County Jail records show was posted by Wednesday morning for her release.<\/p>\n

“She was an officer, but she doesn’t deserve that title now,” Goerke said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The arrest came after about a month-long investigation, from which these facts came out: on April 3, Ferreira was part of the response with medical responders to a deceased male at a St. Cloud home. She took photos of the man’s credit card information while paramedics were working, and loaded the information into a mobile application in order to use them remotely, which she began doing on April 4 outside St. Cloud around Osceola County for expenses like gas, fast food, a hotel room and eyelash extensions, all made on her days off.<\/p>\n

The charges were for about $450, and she tried twice more to use the information after the cards had been canceled. The man’s widow reported the charges on April 14. With the charges happening in county jurisdiction, the Sheriff’s Office conductive the investigation, during which Ferreira admitted to her actions, without further explanation. She was immediately placed on unpaid administrative leave, and she subsequently resigned from the Department.<\/p>\n

Lopez and Goerke said it made officers, “sick and nauseous to do this.”<\/p>\n

“Not all LEOs act like this. We take immediate action,” Lopez said. “Hopefully she’ll be held accountable for everything she did.”<\/p>\n

Goerke said he “felt more remorseful” the actions occurred more than Ferreira might.<\/p>\n

“My sincerest apologies to the victims. To take advantage of a person in a time of need is absolutely reprehensible,” the St. Cloud chief said. “I’m proud to wear this uniform and share the work of what law enforcement on a daily basis. We engage the public on a daily basis to built trust and legitimacy for our agency. That said, I have no tolerance for officers who harm the community or violate its trust.<\/p>\n

“When the matter was brought to my attention we worked very closely with the Sheriff’s Office to assist the criminal investigation. The information in it shocked and appalled me. It violates everything that I expect and demand from our officers.”<\/p>\n

To make the matter more pointed. Goerke said he made sure that Ferreira was arrested in her own handcuffs.<\/p>\n

“The badge she wore has been tarnished and will never be worn again; in fact, it will be destroyed,” he said. “I’m asking the State Attorney to prosecute this to the fullest extent of the law. To our residents and visitors: this person’s actions are in no way reflective of the fine men and women who take their oaths seriously. I will be the first person to take someone out of their uniform for violating these principles.”<\/p>\n

Ferreira entered a crossover training program with the Corrections office in 2021 and began with St. Cloud PD in February 2022. She had spent about 11 months in uniform, Goerke said, and had no prior disciplinary incidents prior to this.<\/p>\n

“In 21 years (with the Orlando Police Department), we’ve taken officers off the street,” Goerke said. “But I’ve never seen anything like this.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
