\nCalifornia Reparations Task Force<\/em><\/p>\n

The California Reparations Task Force is a non-regulatory state agency created in 2020 to study reparation proposals for “African American descendants of persons enslaved in the United States.” Black slaves, in not so many words.<\/p>\n

The purpose of the Task Force is threefold- to develop the proposals, to recommend ways to educate the California public of its findings, and to recommend remedies.<\/p>\n

U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland who is cosponsoring a bill in Congress to study restitution proposals stated, “Reparations are not only morally justifiable, but they have the potential to address longstanding racial disparities and inequalities.”<\/p>\n

The Task Force recently voted to approve a reparations model that is estimated to cost California over $800 billion, nearly 3x the state’s annual budget.<\/p>\n

They’re just getting started.<\/p>\n

The California Reparations Task Force, a committee created by legislation signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, formally recommended that the state legislature repeal a constitutional amendment that prohibits the government from discriminating against, or granting preferential treatment to, someone based on their race.<\/p>\n

Last weekend, the task force formally approved its final recommendations to the California Legislature, which will then decide whether to implement the measures and send them to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.<\/p>\n

Much of the public’s attention has been focused on the price tag of the committee’s proposed reparations to make amends for slavery and anti-Black racism. However, several aspects of the committee’s recommendations, which are outlined in hundreds of pages of documents, have received little attention, including a proposal to repeal Proposition 209.<\/p>\n

California voters passed Proposition 209, now enshrined in California’s constitution, in 1996. The measure amended the California Constitution, adding a section that states in part, “The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting.”<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Even champion virtue signaler Newsome is backpedaling as fast as he can from these, ah, recommendations.<\/em><\/p>\n

“Dealing with the legacy of slavery is about much more than cash payments.” he intoned. “Following the Task Force’s submission of its final report this summer, I look forward to a continued partnership with the legislature to advance systemic changes that ensure an inclusive and equitable future for all Californians.”<\/p>\n
