Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Iowa Senator Joni Ernst (R) is fighting for stronger vetting for women-owned, service-disabled veteran-owned business contracting.<\/p>\n

Basically, Joni Ernst, who is Republican, feels that the current administration is awarding contracts to ineligible entities \u201cself-certifying\u201d as women-owned small businesses (WOSB) or service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses (SDVOSB) to appear as though they are meeting required contracting goals – all without properly vetting them.<\/p>\n

Lack of proper vetting, in her view, promotes an increase in fraud and stolen valor.<\/p>\n

Because of this, Ernst has introduced a pair of bills to counter this trend.<\/p>\n

Ernst Fights for Accountability in Women-Owned, Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business Contracting<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

WASHINGTON \u2014 Despite strong public opposition, the Biden administration is allowing federal agencies to continue awarding contracts to ineligible entities \u201cself-certifying\u201d as women-owned small businesses (WOSB) or service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses (SDVOSB) to appear as though they are meeting required contracting goals.<\/p>\n

To reduce\u00a0fraud\u00a0and stolen valor in federal contracting, U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Ranking Member of the Senate Small Business Committee, introduced the\u00a0Accountability in Women-Owned Small Business Contracting Act<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0Stop Stolen Valor for Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business Contractors<\/em>\u00a0Act<\/em>.The efforts require agencies to only take credit for contract awards made to\u00a0certified<\/em>\u00a0WOSB and SDVOSB and force federal agencies failing to meet their WOSB goals to testify before Congress.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are no real consequences if federal agencies do not meet their goals to support women-owned and service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses.\u00a0Failure has become routine,\u201d\u00a0said Senator Ernst. \u201cAs departments continue to take credit for contract awards made to ineligible businesses, I\u2019m fighting to bring accountability to federal contracting.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Now, the American Legion has thrown its support behind these bills.<\/p>\n

The American Legion is supporting legislation aimed at reducing stolen valor from small businesses falsely self-certifying as Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses (SDVOSBs).<\/p>\n

Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, introduced the Stop Stolen Valor for Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business Contractors Act, as well as the Accountability in Women-Owned Small Business Contracting Act. The bills would require federal agencies to only take credit for contract awards made to certified WOSBs and SDVOSBs.<\/p>\n

\u201cLoopholes allowing small businesses to self-certify as Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses (SDVOSBs) cause imposters to take advantage of government contracting benefits exclusive for SDVOSBs. This has directly led to stolen valor and fraud against the American taxpayer,\u201d said American Legion National Commander Vincent J. \u201cJim\u201d Troiola. \u201cThese egregious practices must end now, that is why The American Legion is proud to support the Stop Stolen Valor for Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business Contractors Act of 2023 and applaud Senator Ernst\u2019s leadership on behalf of our nation\u2019s heroes.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I’m trying to get my mind around all of this.<\/p>\n

The irony of a government initiative to help veteran-owned businesses actually perpetuates stolen valor and undermines the very thing it is trying to promote.<\/p>\n

Hats off to Senator Ernst for attempting to give some proper alignment to all of this.<\/p>\n
