The US is sending Pakistan, one of our closest allies (ahem) $500,000 to help transgender Pakistani youth learn to speak English better. No, seriously, we are.<\/p>\n

Have to admit, when I first saw this article I thought Pakistan, one of the more fundamentalist Islamic countries, was about as understanding of TG folks as Iran etc. are of gays, ie: not at all.\u00a0 Turns out Pakistan is far more progressive on the subject than most places – one of 12 countries who have codified into law transgender rights. From January 2022:<\/p>\n

More than three years after the Islamic Republic of Pakistan enacted a historic law guaranteeing transgender citizens fundamental rights and protecting them from discrimination and harassment, American taxpayers will fund a program to \u201cpromote broader social inclusion of transgender people\u201d in the south Asian nation. The goal is to help Pakistan\u2019s transgender community develop vocational skills and knowledge to improve economic opportunities by, among other things, teaching them how to establish and manage small-scale businesses. Uncle Sam is also throwing in \u201cseed funding\u201d of up to $600 to help transgender Pakistanis set up a business after their skills training.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Biden administration in United States is offering a $500,000 grant to promote English language skills in Pakistan, with a specific focus on transgender youth, Fox News reported on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

The State Department’s human rights report for Pakistan has praised the country’s 2018 Transgender Persons Protection of Rights Act. The report suggests that Pakistani police should prioritise ways to prevent increased levels of violence against transgender people. It notes that public venues in Pakistan were less likely to host “transgender events” than “religiously based anti-LGBTQI+ protests”.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Reading that “increasing levels of violence” phrase tends to make me think that while the legislature may have passed a law, the Pakistani “street” ain’t all that woke.\u00a0 Remember when we didn’t have two and a half billion for a border wall?
