Ever heard of xylazine?\u00a0 It’s used as a tranquilizer for large animals. (Reminds me of PCP – wasn’t that supposed to be a horse tranquilizer when properly used?) Apparently this stuff is nastier – it can kill even large animals if improperly administered, and there is now a xylazine\/fentanyl combination hitting the streets commonly called “tranq” or “the zombie drug.”<\/p>\n
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration issued an alert Monday warning of a \u201csharp increase in the trafficking of fentanyl mixed with xylazine\u201d.<\/p>\n
The anesthetic that\u2019s approved for veterinary use with large animals is not an opioid.<\/p>\n
That means Narcan, a crucial tool in saving lives in the opioid epidemic, cannot reverse its effects.<\/p>\n
The latest data from a state-funded collaborative tracking program in Massachusetts shows that about a third of New England\u2019s illegal drug supply is laced with xylazine.<\/p>\n
Public health experts believe people are taking xylazine both unknowingly and intentionally.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s because some people report that it lengthens the euphoric effects of fentanyl.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s put my life in danger,\u201d said Patricia McGrath, of Boston. \u201cWhen I woke up, it was like a shock. A sense of something I can\u2019t explain.\u201d<\/p>\n
Repeated xylazine use is associated with skin ulcers and severe wounds including the rotting of human tissue, which can lead to amputation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
