Remember the other day we talked about how Penguin and the Dahl family were nicifying Raold Dahl’s work by removing anything potentially “triggering”, “hostile”, or “hurts someone’s widdow feewings”. Well, now they are messing with Holy Writ, trying to de-ball the ultimate Man Books and emasculate the ultimate Male Archetype. I refer, of course, to Bond. James Bond.<\/p>\n

Ian Fleming\u2019s James Bond novels are set to be re-released in April to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Casino Royale, <\/i>but the books will look a little different: They have been altered to remove potentially offensive language at the recommendation of \u201csensitivity readers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fleming used the n-word repeatedly throughout the books he published during the 1950s and \u201960s to describe black people. Now, the word will be scrubbed from the texts and replaced with \u201cBlack person\u201d or \u201cBlack man.\u201d<\/p>\n

A portion of the book that described accented dialogue as \u201cstraight Harlem-Deep South with a lot of New York thrown in\u201d was removed altogether.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Yeah, the N-word is not acceptable nowadays…but these books weren’t written nowadays.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In the Bond books, meanwhile, many mentions of ethnicity have been removed from several of the novels, including Thunderball, Quantum of Solace<\/em>, and Goldfinger. <\/em>Controversial references to other ethnicities will remain, however, including the racial terms Bond uses to refer to East Asian people and Bond\u2019s mocking views of the Korean character Oddjob, according to the report.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So Bond will still be allowed to kill them, just not talk badly about them? Will Blofeld cradle a white cat instead of a Himalayan, will Rosa Kleb will become a height and weight challenged person of Central Asian Slavic extraction?\u00a0 Me, I have the entire set of Signet paperbacks (inherited, Dad was a fan) on a shelf and I ain’t trading them for the purer holier James.\u00a0 I want mine with the “juice” still in ’em. My James Bond wouldn’t trade his DB5 for a Prius.<\/p>\n

You have to wonder what Jack Kennedy would have thought of this… he helped catapult Bond to prominence when asked what books he was reading and he mentioned “From Russia With Love.”\u00a0 However,\u00a0 I suspect I do know which finger Auric Goldfinger<\/em> will be raising?<\/p>\n
